Google Ads with a ceiling you set from your own numbers

Paid search can fill your schedule this month, but only if you know what a lead is worth to you. We set that limit first, then build campaigns for the Richmond Hill communities and services that clear it.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Google Ads works for Richmond Hill trades when you decide the maximum you'll pay for a lead before you spend a dollar. Without that ceiling, the price of a click drifts up to whatever your most aggressive competitor will pay. With it, every keyword, area and ad has to prove itself against your own margins.

What the service is

We plan, build and manage search campaigns in your own Google Ads account. The core work is:

  • Break-even maths: we work out what a lead is worth to you from your average job value, close rate and margin.
  • Tight geography: campaigns target the parts of Richmond Hill and nearby municipalities where you actually want work, rather than all of York Region.
  • Service-specific campaigns: emergency calls, replacements and scheduled maintenance get separate budgets because they're worth different amounts.
  • Landing pages that match the ad: a searcher who clicks "furnace replacement" sees furnace replacement, with a clear way to call, text or email.
  • Tracking: calls, texts and emails are counted as leads; clicks alone are not.

Who it suits

Ads make the most sense when you have capacity to fill and a service with a clear job value:

  • HVAC, plumbing and electrical firms heading into a busy season
  • renovators and basement contractors with high-value projects who can afford a higher cost per lead
  • new businesses that need calls while their local SEO and reviews mature

Ads are a poor fit if you can't answer the phone during the hours they run. If your crew is on the tools all day, look at missed-call text-back tools such as CallText.chat before raising your budget.

Working out your ceiling

Here is the calculation we'll do together. Use your own numbers.

Input Example
Average job value $1,800
Close rate on leads 35%
Revenue per lead $630
Share of revenue you're willing to spend on ads 12%
Maximum cost per lead about $75

If a keyword produces leads at $60, it stays. If it produces leads at $140 for three weeks, it goes, however "relevant" it looks. Our guide on York Region ad budgets walks through this in more detail, including how to treat repeat customers.

Geography that matches Richmond Hill

The city stretches from the Oak Ridges Moraine in the north to the Highway 7 corridor in the south, and the Official Plan treats Yonge Street and Highway 7 as regional corridors. Busy corridors can turn what looks like a short trip on the map into a long one for a van coming down from Oak Ridges at rush hour.

So we usually set areas by drive time from your base, then adjust bids by community. A company based near Beaver Creek may bid hard in southern Richmond Hill and nearby parts of Markham and Vaughan, and lightly in the north.

Timeline and reporting

  • Week 1: ceiling worked out, account audit or setup, tracking tested.
  • Weeks 2–4: campaigns live; daily checks on search terms and wasted spend.
  • Months 2–3: cut what doesn't pay, raise budgets on what does, test new services.
  • Every month: a short report with spend, leads, cost per lead, booked jobs you've confirmed, and what we'll change next.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Letting Google pick your keywords broadly. Loose matching pulls in DIY searches, job seekers and other cities.
  • Sending every ad to your home page. The searcher has to hunt for what they asked for, and many won't.
  • Judging by clicks. A cheap click that never calls is worth nothing.
  • Running ads after hours with no one to answer. Schedule ads for when someone can pick up, or reply by text quickly.
  • Translating ads without a professional. See multilingual campaigns.

Next step

Gather your average job value, your rough close rate and the number of extra jobs you could take next month. Then call, text or email us through the contact page. Plan prices are on pricing. We're a marketing and consulting service and we don't do the trade work ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on Google Ads?

Start from your break-even cost per lead and the number of jobs you can actually handle. If a lead is worth $150 to you and you want 20 more a month, a test budget of about $3,000 in ad spend is a reasonable first month.

Is ad spend included in your plan price?

No. Your ad spend is billed by Google directly to your card, in your own account. Our plan fee covers the strategy, setup and management.

Can I target customers who search in other languages?

Google Ads lets you set language targeting, but the ad itself still needs to be written properly. We plan that through our multilingual campaigns service, with a qualified translator doing the translation.

How fast will I see calls?

Often within the first week, once ads are approved and tracking is live. The first month is still a test, and we expect to cut keywords and areas that don't pay.
